The material offered in the publication comprises the remaining fragments of personal diaries, kept for fifty years by Mogilev resident Haim Avraham Shapira (1850-1918). The author of the diaries, a Torah scholar predisposed toward Hasidism, was part of the special world of traditional Jewish society of the Pale of Settlement throughout his whole life. Views and ideas typical for this world found their expression in his laconic notes, which allow us to recreate different aspects of Jewish life in a provincial town in the late 19th — early 20th centuries.

The diary was originally written in Hebrew. This publication provides a Russian translation, an introduction and detailed notes that reconstruct its historical and cultural context. The texts of Shapira's multiple wills, written in the years 1910-1917, are published as an appendix to the diary. The appendix also includes photos from the family archives of his descendants.
