Keywords: history of Jewish studies; Jewish studies in St. Petersburg; Jewish manuscript and document collections in St. Petersburg; Department of Jewish Culture of St. Petersburg State University
The article deals with the main stages of the development of Jewish studies and education in St. Petersburg (which is the cradle of Russian academic Judaica) starting from the mid-nineteenth century. It also contains a brief review of the world’s largest collections of Jewish manuscripts (starting with the oldest Masoretic codices) and documents stored in the city libraries and archives. Special attention is given to the description of the present state of Jewish studies in St. Petersburg educational institutions, first of all, in the Center for Biblical, Hebrew and Jewish Studies (established in 2000) and the Department of Jewish Culture (established in 2011) of St. Petersburg State University.
